NIT students can now graduate from IITNow NIT students can study at IIT. The board of IIT directors has decided to permit National Institute of Technology (NIT) students to complete their final year in an IIT.
A meeting will be held on January 7, the proposal will be placed before the meeting of the Standing Committee which will be headed by HRD minister M M Pallam Raju.
It is expected that this move will be beneficial as it will utilize the IIT resources optimally and IITs will be able to attract better students and groom them for their PhD programme.
The suggestion is made by the Anil Kakodkar committee in its April 2011 report titled 'Taking IITs to Excellence and Greater Relevance'.
The IITs will admit the NIT students on the basis of their performance in first three years of their engineering, look at recommendations from their teachers. The research potential of the students will be assessed through an interview.
